In Castlebrook, when you turn 16, you become an official Magi, and get your familiar, a magical companion animal. Nessie Smite is almost 16, and could not be more nervous. Luckily, she encounters a talking cat named Hank, who helps her hone her powers. She becomes an expert at Cat Magic, a type of magic based on disguise and darkness. But, on the day before her 16th birthday, she moves out of Castlebrook, into a town with no magic. In her attempts to escape, she meets Cade, fellow Magi and cat lover.
