Six years ago, August 14th. On the way home from a girls' basketball club summer training camp. The bus had fourteen middle school girls including me. While going up a cliff side, the bus blew a tire and ran off the edge. Stranding my classmates and me in the middle of nowhere only surrounded by tons of trees. Causing me, Avery Jennings, to struggle to survive the forest and stay sane.

"I don't know what kind of girl you think I am Greg" I mumbled. I was not the kind of girl who slept with guys on a whim. I wanted him, but not enough to abandon all reason. He took a step toward me, ignored my narrowed eyes and wrapped his arms around me. I wriggled and tried to pull away, but he only held me tighter. His face was impossibly close to me, expression serene to my fury. I could feel him already, pressing into my stomach. Fear shot through me, but the anticipation was equal. "I know exactly what kind of girl you are Maddy... that's the problem" He said simply. His lips crashed into mine, tasting every inch of me. I wanted more than anything to pull away, leave and never mention this again.... but I couldn't do it. The feel of him naked, warm and muscular against me rendered me speechless. I couldn't explain it, but our bodies seemed to fit together somehow and the anger I'd felt just a minute ago. That firey anger at him invading my privacy was gradually merging with the previous lust from last night. Now all I felt was an all consuming need for him to touch me. ....................................................................... Maddy Reynolds' life is a mess. Her best friend's brother Greg has just died and her two best friends Mel and Dom aren't speaking to each other. She has no one to talk to about her confusing feelings towards Greg or why Mel is so distant. Then at the funeral, she becomes friends with Tom Winter by pure chance and he seems to be the only one who understands her. And yet.... even he is keeping secrets from her. The sort of secrets that have the power to change everything. Maddy now has to decide to trust him or find out the truth on her own. Things would have been a whole lot simpler if she'd chosen the latter.

"Listen Kenzy, I know I've been an ass and truthfully maybe you shouldn't even bother returning my calls. You're right, I've been nothing but awful since we met, driving you away yet desperate to keep you close" My heart clinches, but I dared not breathe. Too afraid to give in, too afraid that if I reach for the phone, I'll call. I'll call to make it right. I want to make it right, because this man affects me more than I ever thought he would. But it isn't right. I can't give myself false hope. "Please just talk to me, let me explain. It's not you.....it's me. I'm the asshole. You don't deserve this, you didn't. ..." He pauses and I hold my breath still, fearing he'd hear me breathe, yet, it's only his left voicemail on the phone. Not him "I'm sorry.......dammit!" And that's it, our one sided conversation ends and I'm more broken than before. What happens when your world crashes? When the people you thought would be there forever literally runs through the door without a second glance backwards? What happens with taking a step outside your comfort zone? What happens when that step outside that comfort zone turns into....well unexpected? Personalities clash, feelings are crushed and just maybe that one person you ignore turns out to be the damn life savers. Easy enough, but did I forget to mention they belong to someone else? The air smelled of gasoline and death. That's what woke me first. Not the searing pain in my side or the impossible heat coming from somewhere behind me. No, it was the smell. And then the memories hit me like the bus hit the tree. And I was rolling down the side of a mountain, surrounded by ten other screaming kids and three panicked adults. All of which had a ninety six percent chance of death. My eyes were open. My emerald eyes, so rare that only two percent of the population had them. And my throat was burning, and my skin was tingling. And all I could think about was the probability that I was dying. Scattered around me I knew were twelve other people with a ninety nine percent chance of already being dead. And I didn't look around to find out. Because I knew I was one hundred percent right.
