The college anti-socialist, Serena Oakmonte, has been blackmailed. By whom, might you ask? You would wanna think by an arch nemesis or just some guy that wants to get in her pants, but you would be wrong. Her parents. Yes, her parents were the ones to blackmail. Their proposition:

"If you don't find somebody to share your apartment with, who'll pay half the rent, in one month, then we're eliminating your brothers opportunity to run the family business."

Serena, having the relationship she does with her 15 year old brother, Chase, has no other choice but to do as told. Therefore, leaving her blackmailed. The family business, Estoddia, is a business that basically collects malls and larger shopping areas from all over the world.
