Shayla Thompson is engaged to Sam Morrison, a police detective in their town of Beacon Hills, California. For six years she was able to maintain a normal, happy life with Sam. She has a job as a teacher's aide at the high school and attends college classes on the weekends. But the life she once lived--and now hides from Sam--comes back to her one simple night with the death of a young woman in the woods, the return of an old friend, and the paranoid feeling of being followed by the monstrous beast believed to be responsible for the recent deaths in the town.

And the life she's trying so hard to keep from Sam may well be the very thing that kills him.
