Frank's the epitome of an unreliable protagonist. He's the 20 year old punk who works at the local comic book store who is shy as shit and doesn't really know how to gather his thoughts very well. Not to mention the death of a friend has caused him to suffer from phobias which stop him from going anywhere else besides his eerie apartment and the comic book store. He wants fulfilment in his life but is afraid of love because he doesn't want to put his burden onto someone else. He is tired of being afraid to be needed in case he'll just let someone down. He want's to protect someone without hesitation. He wants to feel needed.

Until a mysterious boy walks into the comic book store looking for something that he left there, 17 year old dependable runaway, Gerard Way. Gerard is sick of feeling like a burden.
Always afraid that his past is itching to catch up with him, he tries to find solace in the local comic book store.
He needs protection, he needs to know what it's like to feel wanted.

I'm sure you can guess how the two meet.

They both need each other, but in order for them to save one another, they'll have to slip into each other's tragedies.
