In district 2 they train you not to be heartless, but to ignore your heart. After years of solitude with Favian her only family Clove has mastered this skill almost as well as she's mastered knife throwing. When new training partners for the year are assigned the day after the 73rd reaping, a mistake is made. Clove ends up partnered in the wrong age category with next years best contender for the crown: Cato Hadley. Everyone is jealous but Clove has bigger problems to deal with than her annoying partner. She has a secret that she's kept hidden for years and only Cato can save her from herself.

I protected her even if she didn't know it was me. I love her. And I will do anything to save her because she saved me first. Clove: He's an arrogant, rich prick. I should hate him. But I don't. Instead, I feel drawn to him. I recognize him from somewhere, but I can't put my finger where I first saw him. He may be three years older than me, but I'm his biggest competition. In a world of pain and despair, two kids navigate their life while figuring out the true meaning of love and hate. Their sheer will to fight pushes them forward as they attempt to achieve one goal: survive.
