Dan is a prince - and a different one at that. Usually you'd think that being a prince is a dream come true, but not for Dan. He just wants a normal life, normal friends, maybe a boyfriend... Finally, he gets the chance to move to a place far away from his small kingdom and live with his Auntie Eleanor. The problem? He has to pretend that he's not a prince. Lying? He's not so great at that. But for someone who wanted a boyfriend but hated the idea of love, he never expected to actually fall in love. Phil Lester. The boy with the black hair, who actually likes Dan for Dan. And so Dan can't tell him that he's a prince in a place on the other side of the world - and he wants it to stay that way. Otherwise he'll have to move back home and never return. Will everybody find out? Will his chance at a normal life be ruined? Dan finds out that not everything is always normal, and most definitely, you can never avoid being one of those who love.

The entire school live in fear of this Year 11 student, who can seemingly do whatever he wants because he's just that dangerous. Phil sees something new in the delinquent, a secret side that no one thought existed in Dan. So what could possibly happen if they genuinely tried to get to know each other? I'm sorry to disappoint you. Now onto what it is really about: Dan Howell is becoming more and more depressed. His family, his community, not even his best friend, Phil Lester, can help him. He believes he's a lost cause, and he's a mistake. He tries to hide it best he can, but some nights, it's just too much. During this, he's lost his will to smile. He'll fake smiles for videos and pictures, but he's lost a reason to genuinely smile.

Dan Howell had been at a Catholic school all of his life. He ate, breathed and lived as a good Christian boy should. However, it didn't fit him, he didn't feel right promising himself to a God he didn't fully believe in. With countless rules Dan wasn't sure he could live his life to eternally, he starts to wonder if this life is his, or his parents. Suddenly, as he begins to doubt everything he's ever been taught, a reformer is brought to St Patricia's, somebody who has the power to change everything; as cliche as it sounds. Dan begins to feel things he ought not to as a good Christian boy, but not every rule is okay to be broken. Dan Howell was the typical spoiled, rich boy with butlers driving him to operas and maids making him nachos for breakfast. Phil Lester, however, was the opposite. Barely any money and deadbeat parents, he lives in a bad neighborhood in a gross apartment with cat hair covering the carpet and an odd roommate. And then Dan's parents decide he needs to love someone rather than himself, and when Phil shows up at his mansion steps, Dan's parents grow fond of him- so much that the two are exchanging rings and Phil is moving in with his new spouse. They tell Dan he should give it a few months, to be patient, and if he still doesn't like him then they'll sign the divorce papers and call it quits. Marriage isn't perfect, right? Well this one is the exact example. But they could always pretend.

Dan is struggling with his self confidence. Well, let's be honest. Dan has no self confidence and struggles to face the harsh realities of life and the pessimistic thoughts and voices that inhabit and nag his brain constantly. Phil tries to help his friend to realize that he really isn't as much as a monster as he thinks of himself to be. These two friends embark on a journey of love, hate, discovery, and confusion. And will they even still be friends by the end of the journey? Will Dan's turmoil break apart their friendship or turn it into something more? Dan and Phil try to answer to the burning question, How to Help Howell? WARNING: Some of this story may be triggering, so if you're sensitive to depressing topics and/or thoughts, gay slurs, mentions of eating disorders, and self harm, this may not be the story for you, which is perfectly fine.
