Dreamland Turns Into Zombieland

I slammed the front door open, the harsh sound of it reverberating through out the house. "Jake!" I called out, my voice trembling, but I was met with a suffocating silence.

My heart hammered in my chest as I swept through every rooms, searching for a glimpse of him even in the shadowed corners. I told myself it was impossible, that I was just being paranoid, but the fear gnawed at me anyway.

'What if something had happened to him?'

The thought spiraled in my mind, untethered and wild, until it crowded out everything else.

My hand shook as I reached for the edge of the end table, my eyes catching on something out of place. A single, folded piece of paper lay there, the only trace of him left behind.

With trembling fingers, I unfolded it.

'Please, forgive me. We knew I'm the only one who can do this. Stay safe, and make sure to protect the others now with me gone.

Kind of a bummer I couldn't bid goodbye to you in person. I never even got to properly confess my feelings..

I will miss you, Cole.'

The words blurred before my eyes as I sank to my knees, the weight of them crushing the air from my lungs. Uncontrollable tears escaped my eyes as I finally understood the path he chose.

He's gone, and this time, he wasn't coming back.
