In this new "perfect" society, everyone gets a barcode on their wrist. These barcodes get scanned every time you do something like going to a social event, eating dinner, participating in class, and when you get grades in school.

The activity of these barcodes are monitored by the government and you get points. There are points for school, behavior, and social activities. If you get a certain number of points in any of these categories, which is rare, the government takes you away to what society believes is a better life.

What happens when  Manaolana, or Lana, is one of these few people? Find out what actually happens to these few people.

When you're marked you have two choices; fight or die. Nance lives in the past, literally. Her city is a recreation of early twenty-first century society. Nance doesn't know the real purpose of her home, and she doesn't care. All she sees are the one hundred teenagers, just like her, who are killed every year in the barbaric ritual known as the marking. They tattoo your face and pit you against your peers, against the city. Nance doesn't know why, but it doesn't matter, because she's sixteen and it's her turn to be marked. **So I decided to replace the original story with the rewrite because they are pretty much exactly the same. Plus, it's a lot less complicated then having two separate books for the same story.** There is a * next to all rewritten chapters. THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS COMPLETE. Everyone was the same. You wake up, change into the same outfit, and then go to school. Society made you all equal, so no person was different from another. If you were strange, you were diagnosed as a Different. For everyone was to wear the same things, act the same, and love the same. A normal person would fall in love after they were twenty to someone of the opposite gender. Marriages were considered a hassle, so you would not have a ceremony, just decide if you wanted to be married or not. Once married, there was no divorcing. For if you were not normal, you'd be coded. Normals wear white, Differents wear black.
