Cassandra Smalls is a high school girl, living in a well, unusual world. In Cassandra's cosmos, people have all sorts of powers, whether it's breathing fire, or controlling water. Cassandra's powers haven't sparked yet and usually they spark in 8th grade. And with not having powers, means that your technically an "outcast" who have to live with a normal job (non-heroic), a normal life, and shame from the society. Since her powers haven't arrived yet, Cassandra gets picked on daily.
Tired of getting picked on over and over again because of how she looks and also because her powers still haven't, Cassandra moves, with her family to a different town, with a new school. In her new school, Cassandra meets new friends, new adventures, and with that come new problems.

Then she finds herself alone at a party with Ren, her best friend's crush. She'd always thought he was rude, but after that night he's all Ella can think about. Now she's trapped. If Ella dates Ren, it will ruin her friendship with Jenny. But if she stays true to Jenny, she's losing the one person who can see past her scars. It's up to Ella to decide if she will forge her own path, or stay in the "perfect" box designed for her...
