Prologue
My heart thudded against my rib cage, threatening to break through and leap from my heaving chest. I didn't understand what was happening. Tears dripped from my terror-filled eyes and rolled down my pale cheeks in what seemed to be slow motion.
I hated this feeling.
This feeling of being cornered.
This feeling of being weak.
Weak.
I hated being the damsel in distress. My pride and intelligence would be insulted if I were to depend on some knight in shining armor to always save me.
But sometimes it can't be helped; sometimes even the mentally and emotionally strong cannot fight back and save themselves. This was one of those times.
