After Chara fell off the bridge, she has been having nightmares about Asriel, causing her to despise him. Chara apologizes at some point after she heals, then tells Asriel that they should make some new, other friends. Asriel doesn't approve of the idea, but lets Chara be, not really expecting Chara to make any new friends and that everything will fall into place.
Boy, was he wrong.
Asriel grows to hate this new friend of Chara's for "stealing" his best friend away from him. That is, untill he learns some dark secrets.
