myrtle bones doesn't like a lot of things.

she doesn't like when her father drags the family across the country to a new location after the police find them.
she doesn't like that he won't tell anyone what crime he committed.
she doesn't like the newest "hiding place", small town lillisfield with the bright sun and clean air.
and she especially doesn't like that she has been enrolled (without permission) in a youth rec center program for the summer.

"make new friends," her herion injecting mother and her grandfather, wheatey, remind her on the first day. "and don't show anyone your dead frog collection."

myrtle has no desire to interact with anyone; she's never had a friend, has a firm disbelief in "summer romance", and plans on staying in the janitor's closet writing in her journal all day.
then on the first day, all her worst fears are confirmed when a unsuccessful robbery takes place and she's stuck in a room with a gay model, a military brat, and a hippie that just won't talk.
after a few hours of confessions albeit "the breakfast club", the group decides to create an act for the rec group talent show.
throw in a dance, late night bike rides, picnics, first kisses, friendship, revelations, and fashion advice, and myrtle is starting to look at the world through rose colored glasses; something she hasn't done since she was four years old.
but when she's at her highest point, she discovers the truth about her family. and, in a quote from her summer love, "all secrets will be deadly."
