Layla was his target. She was the one who had gone against him, nearly ruined everything! He wanted to kill her, Zeref NEEDED to kill her. But the day he set out to find her, instead of finding Layla, he found out that she had died.

Zeref was ang- No, he was beyond anger. She had gone and died on him, so he couldn't have the fun of torturing her, putting her through the pain she put him through. And then at last... killing her.
