Ok. This will be confusing but I'm going to try.
Stiles has been through alot. After Derek returned with his alpha powers back and his impromptu confession everything is going wonderful. He even has a surprise for his big bad. But when Derek dies in a fight for Beacon Hills, Stiles has nothing left. He has one hope, one opportunity to fix as much as he can.
