After managing to find the heir to the throne of Erebor, Gandalf the Grey persuades the Dwarf, Thorin Oakenshield, into reclaiming his long lost homeland. In order to do that, however, Gandalf insists that they need a certain burglar in order to steal back the jewel that will ensure Thorin's authority as the king. What's going to happen when the Wizard's original candidate turns him down, forcing him to turn to his alternative, who is a complete stranger to Middle Earth?

Arielle Farran has no business being a valet to anyone, let alone to Thorin Oakenshield, but she really has no choice. Her twin brother, Elen was actually supposed to take the position, only to have a serious injury throw a wrench into the works and lands them in serious financial straits. Either she pretends to be him, or they lose the only home they've ever known. Reluctantly, Arielle agrees and shows up at Erebor's gates as Elen and from the moment she meets the King Under the Mountain, she knows she's in trouble. Thorin doesn't really want a valet, but his sister Dis has decided otherwise and since it's easier to give in than fight with her, a valet will soon be his. Although he's survived the wounds he received at the end of Azog's blade, his recovery is far from complete. When she's asked to help the dwarves tend to their wounded, medical student Jasna Stoneham reluctantly agrees. Not only is she only just barely a qualified to even set foot in the infirmary, but she stutters when she gets nervous and nervous does not even begin to describe how she's feeling. To make matters worse, no one thought to warn her that she would be caring for the king himself, Thorin Oakenshield. Unfortunately, the road to recovery isn't necessarily a smooth one, but if there's one thing Thorin will learn, it's that what Jasna lacks in experience and training, she makes up for in stubbornness, giving him a run for his money. And for every backwards step he takes, she is there to push him three steps forward. And Jasna will soon find out that there is a gentle, softer side to the dwarf king, one that very few people have ever seen and one he fights to keep hidden from her as well. But like his recovery, that is also easier said than done.

He is on his way to the town of Bree, in search of his own father, Thráin, who has been missing for years.
