Claire and Robin were best friends from when they first met in day care. They went to the same day care and elementary school and were attached at the hip. He was always protective over Claire, who was a bit fragile, and would push her to do daring things. When he got too crazy and out of line, she would put him in his place and make sure he didn't get into serious trouble or danger. One day, Claire is taken in by the popular girls. Robin and Claire continue to talk, text, and hang out from time to time until something tragic occurs. Someone kills Robin's father. He tries to get in touch with Claire but she is nowhere to be found. She has no clue what has happened and is too busy being popular to notice that Robin has stopped calling and texting and even walking her home after school.
At the beginning of senior year in middle school, Claire's "best friend" spills every secret that Claire has ever told her. Everybody thinks she's a freak. She becomes the outcast. She spends all her time reading books and focusing on school. High school comes and she gets through half the school year going unnoticed and friendless, until Robin is placed in her class and told to be her lab partner. He realizes it's her and she is oblivious as to who he is because he's gone off the rails and become "the bad boy". She secretly crushes on him from afar up until they're lab partners. But he holds a grudge and she soon learns why. She tries to get him to believe that she didn't know and would've been around if she did. She tries to do whatever she can to rekindle their friendship.
But will something that her father did a while back get in the way?
