The story is set in Niriyain, an interdimensional prison world where those who enter can never leave. The power begins to alienate him from those around him, even as he feels the weight of the Unbeknownst's expectations. Meanwhile, the ruling High Council-a group of ruthless overseers who maintain strict control over Niriyain-becomes aware of Cal's newfound power and sees him as a threat to their secret plans. As Cal begins to uncover the horrors perpetrated by the High Council, including experiments that turn people into mindless soldiers with glowing green markings, he realizes the extent of their cruelty and the chains they've placed on the people of Niriyain. Though reluctant, Cal begins to embrace his role as the Unbeknownst's herald, using his powers to protect the outcasts of Niriyain and push back against the Council's tyranny.
