The United States is divided into two governments who will capture and even kill people who want to explore away from their villages. There is a wall in between the places where each government lies, separating families and friends. The only thing keeping the citizens in place besides the governments are the mutant creatures they created called Pecus. The Pecus roam outside the villages and kill whomever happens to stumble across their paths. However, these three things don't scare Elliot enough to stop him from getting back to his true love Aspen, who promised to always wait for his return. But will he be able to survive long enough to reach her?

If you don't work you don't eat. Eighteen year-old Poppy has struggled to make ends meet in order to care for her family. When the mayor begins cutting the citizen's rations in order to encourage the town's people to capture a man with a bounty on his head, Poppy is forced to sacrifice herself to save those she loves. Once the man is safely return to the mayor alive, all rations will resume normally and the capturer will be reward with plenty of rations to supply them for the rest of their life. Only those who are insane would risk leaving the fence. Poppy may just fit into that category.
