This story was written for the second contest of @Fantasci. The prompt they offered was interesting: there are two lovers, one has turned evil, and the other is charged with defeating them. Oh, and it had to be under 2k words. 

As I was turning over what angle I would take in writing this contest entry this story leaped fully formed into my mind. The scene was so vivid I managed to churn out the story in a single day while trapped in a busy office . . . when I should have been working on other things. Please don't tell my boss.

Each lead groups of people infected by a virus, which provides the people powers that mirror those of the Apex animals on the planet: the Wolve's ability to heal, the extraordinary eyesight of the Ravens, the physics-defying Tigers, the resilient and water savvy Orcas, and the super-strength Bears. Despite the new powers that appear to provide prolonged peace to the planet, a sinister character lurks in the background plotting their own mysterious and nefarious goals: The Scientist. Now I have to finish by May 5th. I'm not as far along as I had hoped at this point, but I'm sure I can make it. May 4th. 12:10 am. Finished. Submitted. Good night. May 20th. Well, 13 Points made the Long List. I have no idea how many original entries there were but about 940 made the first cut. There's 150 on the Long List. Not bad for my first time out. Now we'll wait and see how we fare on the Short List. May 30th. Well, Sarah and company didn't make the Short List. I can't say I'm disappointed though.
