That aside, this is based in a matriarchal society ( a society run by women). In this society men are property, have no worth, and are looked down upon by women. But young girls have it bad too; their mothers control their lives until they turn 15 and love in this society is frowned upon, mocked and can land you in prison or even cost you your life.
this story includes a man who steps out of his place in society by falling in love, a girl who lives as the state executioner who is the one whom the man loves, a man who fights back at the government after a failed marriage, and a girl, forced into marriage by her mother at the age of 14.
