After about a year of research and trawling through family records, I have been able to paint a relatively accurate view of my great Granddad, William or 'Jack' Payne's role in the armed forces during the Second World War. The more I found, the more I was amazed. The story commences just before the Allied invasion of France, re counting his very steps along the Norman coastline. When he is seemingly gravely injured, the story will go back to the beginning of the war, in France and Belgium in 1940, when Payne was in the Royal Field Artillery. He experiences some of the most brutal and dramatic actions in the Second World War that a British soldier could be involved in Europe during the war. These include famous, and not so famous raids, attacks and bitter battles of attrition. His story is just one of millions, and I hope these first four chapters have done it some sort of justice. (oh and, sorry for the messed up text layout, I'll try and sort it out soon!)
