Long ago, when the pyramids were still young, Egyptian kings played a game of great and terrible power, but these "Shadow Games" erupted into a war that threatened to destroy the world until a brave and powerful Pharaoh and his sister locked the magic away, imprisoning it within the eight mystical Millennium Items.
Now, 5,000 years later, a young boy named Yugi Moto and his twin sister Iris Moto, unlocked the secrets of the Millennium Puzzle. Yugi's body was infused with mystical energies while his sister received the power of the Millennium Bracelet, allowing her to know her twin brother's thoughts and where he is so that she may always find him.
For destiny or Fate or the gods or some other divine force have chosen them, a mute boy and his interpreter twin sister, to protect the world against the return of the Shadow Games, just as the brave pharaoh twins did over 5,000 years ago.
