Dan Gardner grew up in a family that was all about his safety and would protect him at any cost. Dan had always been a good kid and had the best grades in all his classes. He was predicted out of his school to become very successful. When Dan was 22 he meet Vanessa (His Wife) at a party in college. They spent the rest of college dating until they graduated when then Dan proposed to her in 1951. Once they got married they had their kid Jack and then 2 year later they had their daughter Olivia. His life was going good as he worked as a tool maker at Davidson Factory. Until November 1st, 1955 when the Vietnam War started to stop the spread of communism in Indonesia. He and his family were worried that he might have to go overseas but he thought that his chances were slim. Until he got the letter commanding him to join the war. He was deployed on April 5th, 1956. He was sent into battle within the first week. What went from 1 week went to 5 months, then 1 year, then 3 years, then to 5, then to 8 years. Dan seem to believe that returning home would be easy but upon returning he is faced with the reality that his family had moved on and his whole family had believed that he had died in war. But instead of them being glad that he is home, they are upset that he didn't try to reach them even though he had tried multiple times. And after getting out of war he struggles with trying to settle into a normal environment.

When the main character was 10 he witnessed a citizen returning to the Core. The story continues 10 odd years later when he again witnesses a similar situation unfolding and manages to touch the person returning to the Core. This causes him to be swept up in the transfer as well and for his mind to join as a "Guest" user of the Core. As a Guest he has limited powers, a starting balance of zero cr or Citizen credits, and no idea how he can get home. He is the first human to ever become a Guest of a Core.
