Myra Waugh is a 24 year old high school teacher. She was, she thought, an ordinary girl who fell in love at 18, got married at 19 and divorced at 22. Now living alone, picking up the pieces of a broken relationship she tries to seek comfort in her job, which is teaching English literature to sophomores at River Valley High School.
