Carl Richards is an inspector at the peak of his career. Well, actually no, he's a 70 year old man with Alzheimers. All he can remember is is a case from thirty-nine years ago, when he WAS at the peak of his career. It's a serial killer who leaves almost no clues, and a "strangely inspirational quote" after every murder.

I remember that case and the year I spent working on it like it all happened yesterday. Actually, I remember it much better than the boring day I was forced to spend in the hospital yesterday. You could even say I remember it better than anything these days, with the Alzheimer's beginning to set in. Thirty-nine years later, that case is the only thing still on, and in, my mind. That case, and the events surrounding it, changed my life, forever.

The exit door lead to the back of the building so it was pitch black. I leaned against the wall trying to control myself. Blood was running down my arm and head. My hair was stuck to my face from all the sweat and blood. Everything was spinning around me and the ground seemed like it was shaking. Groaning I sat down and put my head on my knees. He knows who I am. He knows how I look like. He knows where I work so possible knows where I live. I am not safe anymore... no where. While I was in my own world I heard faint sounds behind me but I didn't bother to look or run away. The footsteps got closer and I was pretty sure it was Walker's men. I should run. I should try to fight. But what's the point in trying to run away? He would eventually find me and if he has his way he would most likely kill me. If this is my fate then why am I trying to fight it? I felt someone harshly grab my waist and pull me up and I complied. They dragged me down the alley and into the busy street. On the heels of their success of solving the Resmar Murders, a cold case that is well over a decade old, lands in the laps of detectives Hank and Sam in the west coast town of Eustice and its leading up to the one of their biggest challenges to date. Not only is a rough start with the new team that they have to overcome, but also evidence that's truly out of date, and top it off with having the frustration of a new office. Add in the fact that it's an older case and the murders had just stopped without word makes it even harder. But what's now creepy is that the same exact murders are happening again, with the same use of a pool ball at the scene. Can the detectives solve the case in time again? For all obvious reasons to his story, Cato should be dead. By some miracle, he's not. Somehow surviving a brutal attack, he wakes up instead to the insistent beeping of hospital equipment, to be told he's the only suspect for the same murder case he was rescued from, found clutching the bloody weapon in one hand with absolutely no clue of how it got there and no evidence to point elsewhere. And the biggest problem? He has no memory of that night. The murder wiped clean, just as bare as the evidence of the case, making it impossible to know the truth. But as his journey to finding the truth continues he can't ignore the growing nagging in his gut that there's more to this. Something else was there that night. Someone.
