After getting expelled from school after school in New York, Emma Williams and her brother Ethan are sent to the UK's esteemed Mueller Academy of Higher Education for a calmer and more controlled environment (and not to mention more experienced teachers to keep them in line). But is Mueller really a better option? Months after Emma's arrival, a sickness starts spreading throughout Britain which throws the infected into an uncontrollable coughing fit, often causing the person to faint and fall unconscious. But as the disease spreads and mutates, a world-wide quarantine falls into place, leaving Emma stuck across the world from home with people who can't stand her. Just months after the disease, called Dirus-Tussis, is discovered, Emma and her best friend Sophie remain the only people left uninfected. As teachers and students at Mueller start dying, Emma can only begin to wonder what could possibly be worse than a world plagued by an incurable cough.
