By the 26th century humanity has colonized hundreds of new worlds. The warp drive has made unthinkable distances traversable. Mars and Venus have been transformed to be like Earth. Extraterrestrial life has been discovered on many worlds. But what about intelligence? Was the gift of consciousness and culture granted only to Earth's children?

A signal from an orphan planet announces the answer. Starships from the United Interstellar Nations and the Astros Empire face off as history is written. On Earth, the political game of war and peace is entering its most critical stage. All this at the backdrop to the greatest discovery of our species.
