Kara is a girl who ran away from her foster home in Detroit at seven years old. At fifteen she has a job, an apartment, and a pen pal: her little sister, who still lives in a foster home. Kara wants to record a demo so she can get money to get her sister out of the foster home. But, on her way to musical success, she runs into problems that almost kills her.
