The summer before college. It was supposed to be her first step into the world beyond the familiar, a chance for Esther Carmichael to leave her parents and her small town behind, if only for a week or two, before she stumbles headlong into the next chapter of life. It was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime - until it all went wrong.

Finding herself stranded in a service station in the back end of nowhere, with a lifelong friendship in tatters and only thirteen dollars to her name, Esther can't see how things could get much worse. What she needs is a miracle, but those just don't happen to girls like her...
