In the unused railways beneath the streets of London lives a peculiar sort of folk; the outcast; the overlooked. Valerie Glass wasn't always a Sewer Rat. She remembers the days of splendour, dinner parties and extravagant gifts. She was to be a Lady, envied for her beauty and cleverness. One night before her very eyes her future unravels. Her mother is murdered by wildling vampires, her father's body torn to pieces. It would have been her fate too had it not been for Cordelia: a vampire who still sees the beauty in humanity. Valerie escapes with Cordelia to Underlondon where they remain hidden for a decade. With no warning strange things begin to plague the city. Harlots go missing only to turn up several days later with their throats torn out, hearts missing. Thieves are found wandering the dark streets above eyes glazed over and mumbling an archaic incantation. A war is coming and a boy with eyes the colour of jade believes he is the key to Valerie's survival.

Faline Collins has never fit in. The only people she remotely gets along with is her family and her best friend Bertie. But Faline's life begins to look up when she finds an enchanting necklace: an amber stone with an ancient design on it, all hanging on a silky black ribbon. The gift inspires Faline to search for her biological parents. With only her necklace and a postcard, Faline and her best friend Bertie take off on a trip to England, where Faline believes she may have been born. So away they go, eager to explore England, but also to see if they can find more clues leading up to Faline's very mysterious past. But Faline's adventure abroad takes a strange turn when she runs into a young man, scar-faced Brent, who takes a sudden interest in her necklace. Things get weirder yet when just few nights later, Faline is attacked by an other-worldly shadow creature and saved by an over-sized black cat. According to some locals who believe her wild tale, she was saved by the infamous Black Beast of Exmoor. As she tries to find out more about the elusive beast, she discovers there is a dark magic behind the legend and it is more than just local folklore. And what's more, her past has a big part of it, and Faline finds that she may be the answer to the age old war of good and evil, of light versus darkness.
