Ty Dubeaux is an impoverished teen born four generations after Magic awakened spontaneously in 21st century America and ripped the nation into fragments.  Now, the segregated city of Antebellum is one of the few places where humans can live in safety from environmental hazards and the lovecraftian devils that wander aimlessly in the Abyss outside. But a paradise is everything it isn't and will never be.

All Ty wants to do is stand side-by-side with his best friend Victor, and ensure he lives long enough to leave his family name unsmeared and better than how he left off. However, after a fiasco that results in Ty being ousted from one of the only chances for potential survival for a Slum Rat like him. Desperate to give his mother hope while she is on death's doorstep, Ty shoots his shot at the city's magical coming-of-age trial: the Forge Ceremony. 

Ty's choices land him in the middle of several plots for the future of the not only the city, but the Eastern Territory itself  as he ends up in the one position a Slum Rat would sooner die: training to become one of the hated, and oppressive enforcers for the city's magical government: The Coven Marshalls.
