Hannah Bellamy is captain of the volleyball team, a straight-A student with blonde hair, blue eyes and a seemingly perfect life. But there's one thing Hannah never had: a boyfriend. He's always too short, too creepy or just not quite enough for Hannah to open up and finally let someone in.

Esmerelda Clarke is the polar opposite; a rebellious misfit with unruly chesnut hair and skin the colour of caramel, and she's never taken to sports. Her romantic past is rocky; a summer fling here, a kiss in the back corner of a party there, but never anyone brave enough to tame Esme's reckless ways. Plus- Esme's a lesbian, and there doesn't seem to be many of those around here.

But when Esmerelda's mother becomes sick of her daughter's misbehaviour she issues an ultimatum; join a sports team and learn some discipline, or be shipped off to a boarding school back in Mexico. Hannah willingly accepts the challenge of teaching Esme the basics, it would look good on college applications after all. But, neither of them can anticipate the heat that arises, and it's not only on the volleyball court.
