"There once was a girl barely anyone knew about. Every night, she would go from dorm to dorm, visiting every sleeping student. She wouldn't enter their rooms to hurt them, though. The only thing she would do is search through their trash cans, pick up a piece of trash and leave again. But if the student she is visiting isn't sleeping and she notices, he won't be able to move at all for some reason. It's like magic! And if he were to see her face, that student wouldn't see the one of a young, beautiful girl, but the one of a monster. There is something else to the story, though. If a student took something out of his trash can after already throwing it away, the girl would get angry and turn them into a monster. The student would never be seen again. As a middle school teacher, I am constantly in awe of the relationship between children and their cell phones! Most children are closer with their phones than any of their friends. It's become quite problematic. I've had students who cannot fathom more than moments at a time without their precious cell phones by their side. The need to check social media and be involved in the latest viral craze has become quite an epidemic. I wrote a story about one boy who so badly wanted to a part of the wave. However, his desire for a cell phone becomes an experience he will never, ever forget. Jessie Davidson is tired of being left out of group chats and Instagram posts! Everywhere he looks, his friends and classmates are hanging out not with each other, but through their cell phones. Jessie desperately wants to be included and constantly feels left out. His problem is that his parents don't believe that he should own a cell phone at such a young age. What's a young boy to do? Well, Jessie's problems appear to be solved one day when mysterious things start happening all around him. A strange looking man appears to Jessie and offers him a deal which he cannot refuse. A deal that gets Jessie exactly what he's always dreamed of, or so he thought. A deal that gets him his very own, brand new cell phone. Jessie finds out the hard way quickly that things are not always as they appear to be when his phone, his ticket for popularity and social super stardom begins doing things he could never dream possible. I'm inspired by they way young children interact with technology and social media, and think it is quite a frightening scene in 2019. I think there are endless scares to be had with modern day technology, and many books to be written. I envision a series of books revolving around the fears modern day technology, most notably social media, cell phones and gaming can bring. My goal is to bring our oldest fears to life through these new outlets for children.

The only thing that eighteen-year-old Andy Bradshaw had on her mind was that she was graduating high school in a matter of a few months. Andy has never been one of the popular girls because she makes good grades in all of her classes, reads and aspires to become a great writer. Unfortunately, she doesn't have anything to write about. Her twin brother, Riley, wants to follow a different path and become a rock guitar god. Because of this, they are almost always at odds. Andy has only a small circle of good friends which isn't anything bad to complain about. That is, until, a new and definitely different social media app pops up into everybody's phone screens. It is Hater, an app dedicated for users to only post hate comments back and forth to each other. Anyone who decides to no longer put up with any of the negativity and post a nice or positive comment mysteriously disappears. As the student body of John P. Dorset High School and the rest of the world grows more and more out of control due to the presence of Hater, it is up to Andy and her friends to stand up for themselves and come together as a team to take down this faceless threat. The only question that remains is: can Andy act quickly and take down this Internet monster before she loses everyone that she loves as they slowly disappear one by one?
