Disclaimer-- Yes, this is titled the family jewels. No, it is not about genitals. Sorry.

Now for the real stuff:

My fingers fumbled through the drawers, searching for what I already knew was gone. I opened one after another, only to find that everything was in it's rightful place, just like it had been before. At last my hand landed on the latch of the top drawer, and it rolled open quickly.

Through the darkness of my thought, my eyes recognized a small box in the corner that I would have otherwise overlooked. I lifted the top off of the box, holding the base in the palm of my hand, and seethed with rage when a small charm was revealed, surrounded by a layer of foam protecting it from getting damaged.

The jewelry box felt like ice in my hand, burning my skin so much that I was sure it would leave a mark. I threw the box back and slammed the drawer shut with force powered by anger. Then, just as suddenly, I was surrounded by a thick coat of silence.

I needed to record every detail of my surroundings so I wouldn't forget. No, I couldn't forget all of this again, at least that was what Ryder told me. He said that even though it probably didn't make any sense to me, I had to write it down, that way I would remember, and I would be able to figure out what was going to happen next. I had to be able to know what was going to attack me and how before the attacker even knew that he was going to.

None of it made that much sense to me, but I knew that Ryder wanted to keep me safe.

I knew I wanted to protect him, my race... and myself.
