The shed was supposed to be empty.
Jack wasn't looking for anything when he opened the door, just another corner to hide from the noise of his foster home. But inside, he found her-a small, pale girl, her silver hair tangled and matted with blood, her eyes wide with fear.
"Please," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Don't tell them."
"Tell who?" Jack asked, his heart pounding.
Her gaze flickered toward him, desperate. "Hide me."
Jack's breath caught. He didn't know who was chasing her, or why she was here, but one thing was clear-he couldn't turn her away.
"I won't," he promised, kneeling beside her. "I won't tell anyone."
Her eyes closed, relief flooding her tiny face, before she murmured one last thing: "Don't let them find me."
And just like that, Jack's life was no longer his own.
