A shattered world; a city on the verge of cataclysmic meltdown; these are the settings for a war of ultimate proportions.
Fifteen years ago, a mentally unstable scientist accidentally unleashed a dark force on the world, known to humankind as "Despair". This Despair caused people to kill, cheat, lie, steal, and break down a once-civilized society. Within the Despair rose the first Warriors of Hope, who fought against the Despair with their light of Hope.
Now, to take up the mantle of reversing the damage done by not only the Despair, but the war between Hope and Despair, the Future Foundation stands tall. Their goal: take out the Ultimate True Despair hiding in the shadows. Though theirs isn't an easy task.
On the other side of the city, a ragtag group of high school students known as the Remnants are trying to survive, and to not succumb to the Despair-infested slums. When their paths cross with the six Future Foundation members, their fate will be determined by the Year of Mutual Killing.

(This is a sequel to Danganronpa: Darkened Hope. I recommend that you read Darkened Hope if you haven't already, both to avoid spoilers for that story, and to contextualize this one.)
Another killing game.... another bunch of students.... another story of murder and betrayal and deceit....
But this time.... Something's different.
When Benshirou Kuwahara woke up in the courtyard behind a mansion, he didn't know what to expect. At first glance, it appeared he was being held hostage with fifteen other students with exceptional talent in certain skills, somewhat like himself. But the truth was much more horrifying than just a simple kidnapping.
Monokuma, the supposed landlord of "Despairblood Manor," as he called it, was nothing but sadistic and cruel. To escape, one must murder. With this one simple rule in place, everyone's lives are in danger. What will become of the Ultimates residing in the mansion? How many will die? How many will survive? Will they ever know the answers to these questions, or will the bloodshed keep on going?
