This is a fairy tale I wrote in the style of the Grimm brothers and Hans Christian Anderson.
I've always been a huge fan of Old World fairy tales and really tried to capture the spirit of them here. I'll leave up to you whether or not I succeeded.
The central theme here mostly revolves around the realities of getting older and the lengths to which some people may go to cling to their youth.
Come to think of it, that's been a recurring theme in most of my short fiction, haha.
Perhaps I'm just as freaked out about getting older as my characters XD

Yes, that's what I read about him (among other things)-- he kept falling in love with unatteinable women. My story portrays Hans Christian Andersen as a young, fourteen-years-old boy. It's set in Odense, Denmark, in the late summer of 1818-- soon after Hans' mother, a poor washerwoman, remarried (two years after his father's death) and shortly before he was sent to a school for poor children where he had to support himself. Where he became, to be able to afford his schooling, first a weaver's, then a tailor's apprentice, a singer, an actor and finally, once his excellent soprano voice changed, a writer. Hans and Louise, his (fictional) step-sister, seek refuge from a summer storm in an old shed. There, they meet Rosalind, a lost Flower Fairy. When they decide to help her find the Butterfly Fairy boy she loves and intends to marry, she takes them into a fantastical world of Terra Sonalis, her home. A land of dreams populated by fairies, goblins, elves, mermaids, talking animals... All those mysterious creatures that fuelled Andersen's imagination for the rest of his life. ☆☆☆Terminé

Carmen had always found her life as a daughter of an antique shop owner to be ordinary and adventure-less. Almost all of the members in her town think she's odd and the richest man in town wants to marry her, but she wants something else. One evening on a business trip she and her father get lost in an old almost abandoned castle. However they are not welcomed and the beast who lives there let's them know that right away. Carmen begs for her fathers freedom and the beast allows him to live if his only daughter agrees to live the rest of her life in this castle with the beast. Carmen agrees to live with the beast in his castle and as time goes on she begins to realize that this castle and the beast himself are not all that seem to be. Esme had one big fear in life: being captured as a thief by the city's guardsmen and being executed for her crimes, and that so heavily weighed on her mind that she increased her risks by being distracted in the middle of a heist. That's when she runs into Althalos Fourthborn: Inner Circle Guardsman, one of the many princes of the realm, an Aelif (Dark Elf, local dialect)...and her betrothed by treaty. (That was something her almost human mind could not handle.) So she calls off the heist, gets demoted into a far more risky job, learns the true bitter depth of what this treaty's bond is like, and lands safely by her prince's side....sort of. There were people who still wanted to end her life, even if she was in what most people would call a Happily Ever After. That and her prince had his own living fears that were gnawing at any chance they had. That and she might just lose her mind from everyday boredom. But the one she couldn't wrap her all-too human mind around was that she would one day grow wings and fly away from her almost Happily Ever After to live in a hive with ancestors more alien than a hottie with pointed ears and abandonment issues. ~~~~ Yes, there are adult themes in this book, and difficult subjects, but nothing is excessive, as this is probably my simplest story. So, trigger warnings: A history of assault. Occasional vulgar language. References to partial cannibaliam. Extremely mild, light, and rare sex scenes.
