Some children are born with supernatural gifts. These children are referred to as "The Gifted." This strange and bizarre birth defect is extremely rare and completely random. No one knows the cause of why some children are born this way, and there are those who would wish this rare breed of human harm.
Miss Lavinia Gooding, an adult Gifted who wishes to protect those like herself, has founded a school for children and teens born with these rare gifts, a place where they can live a normal life in peace. She teaches and raises them with love and care, though sets for them a strict set of guidelines. One of those guidelines is that they may never pass through what she refers to as "The Gate."
One day, the peaceful life Miss Gooding has created for these children is torn apart when Malorie Brady, one of the oldest students at the Academy, discovers the Gate open, and one of the students missing.
