Meredith's parents got divorced when she was seventeen, then her mother moved to Florida with her and Samantha, Mere's sister. Mere moved back to Toronto when she turned twenty-two. She has never had any luck with guys until she met Bret, while she was living in Florida, but he broke her heart.
When Mere's mom Tammy gets a boyfriend, she is even more eager to have her daughter move back. Mere agrees to visit for four months which she thinks is enough to see her mom. But, when Mere meets Nigel it's not good.
