Irene Kepler: A Brief History of Human Rights

As a social worker, professor, and human rights advocate, Irene Kepler has always been interested in subjects surrounding social justice. Human rights of ancient history are so remarkably different than modern implementations, that it merits additional study.

While the ideas or liberty and basic rights have existed in one way or another throughout human history, they have varied greatly depending on the time period. The history of human rights can be traced by historians by looking at past documentation. Some of the earliest implementations of uniform human rights occurred in the 16th century. This early conceptualization centered around the idea of natural laws and natural rights, ones that did not need specific legislation to be valid.
