The following day is Charon's 40th birthday and there is nothing to celebrate. Born on a momentous day in the history of Mars, Pennsylvania, Charon Juet was expected to live a charmed life. Instead, she pours coffee, flips pancakes, and fends off unwanted compliments from the patrons of the only diner in Mars. With little to lose, Charon asks a stranger to come home with her. At the doorstep, Charon is stopped by a small lie she told earlier in the day. It was the kind of lie we tell strangers all the time. Or maybe it was mostly a lie, but (also) partly the truth.
