In a new world, children between the ages 10 and 17 are given a test that will determine if they have a deadly infection called the Bite, and their weaknesses and strengths. Everyone with the Bite are quickly sent to death. Sixteen year old Louisa never knew her father. She just knew that he was a Butcher, having the horrible job of killing underage children with the Bite. She has reached the age where she absolutely must be tested. Of course, you'd think Louisa would be scared. But she was taught that fear is evil. If you were scared, you would surely fail. But when Louisa wakes up in a barren wasteland with few supplies and all alone, Louisa must overcome the odds facing her and survive; even if it means being completely and utterly terrified. But Louisa finds out she is a part of the big Test. Along with a few companions she picks up along the way, Louisa and her team must fight against the many obstacles to find freedom. And maybe a little romance too. (cover made by the awesome DreamLilies)

It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated. There is nothing to fear if you don't make yourself emotionally vulnerable. James has spent the last five years helping to build up a colony of survivors. He believes in the small town they have populated and its mission to save humanity from extinction. He and his small team of men find scattered people and bring them in. Over the last two centuries, women have fought for and won more and more rights, gaining equality with men. Society, law, and technology bolsters and enforces these rights, but now they are gone. Women's equality with men is over. There are just too few of them. They aren't lesser but greater, more important, more valuable than men. Men are expendable. Men can stay outside alone if they like, but all women must be brought inside the safety of the Colony and properly taken care of. James has been searching the area Leah lives in. Her time of solitude is up. Leah sparks something in James he's never felt before. He's not letting this one get away, certainly not twice.
