When Clacelea becomes over-populated, the eldest child from every family must either marry or be cast away from the community, shunned and stranded in the wilderness, known as exile, outside of the only world they know. Its a death sentence. After her elder brother Kye kills himself to escape from a forced marriage or expelsion, Ireland Laket is pushed into the role of eldest child. Due to her late availability and lower class background few will take her and, those that will, Ireland richly refuses. Soon she is cast over the fence into a world so different from her own, darkness seeps in the shadows and monsters lurk behind burnt cities.
