After the sudden death of her grandmother leaves her alone in the world, Yunae strikes out on a journey to find a place where she belongs. Just as she's beginning to give up hope, she meets a strange, shadowy man named Xyaie. She is immediately swept into a life she never imagined possible and begins to find answers to questions she never thought to ask. Is it possible that a man she hardly knows holds the answers to her past?
Excerpt:
"Is it enough?" she asked, wildly eager for him to try. She was invigorated by the magic.
His response was a movement: he swept his hand through the sky, cutting into the air as he did when they first met.
Unlike then, however, the cut did not fade. It remained; a jagged blank in her vision-a color too dark to truly see.
She felt like howling in victory, caught up in the thrill of it all. Instead, though, she turned to him, triumphant, "We did it!"
"We did," he echoed, his voice was solemn, not at all reflecting her victorious cheer.
The exhilaration vanished. "I can't go," she told him, understanding.
"I cannot bear you safely through the void," the explanation itself was an apology.
She offered a smile, true in spirit; she wanted him to go home safely, "It's alright. I understand. Thank you for everything."
He opened his mouth as if to reply, but no words came out. Instead, she suddenly felt him press something into her hand and then his lips were on hers. The kiss was gentle and sweet, but she did not return it-it was over too quickly. She was too surprised react, and then he was gone.
The shock it caused almost stunned her, but not quite. She had made a decision. She rushed toward the gap in the sky faster than she knew she could move. She threw herself into it; falling, hurtling, caught.
Memories were fleeting shards of a fractured past, dulled by time and buried beneath pain. For Maeri, the only clarity was him - the man whose voice carried promises as sweet as they were suffocating.
Seven hundred days beneath his unrelenting watch, each sunset trapped within walls that whispered horrors only she could hear - the echoes of a girl who could barely recall herself. Scars marred skin like ghostly confessions, while tears carved silent rivers of longing. Somewhere beyond the shadows lay a family long forgotten, a home that felt more like a dream.
But even in despair, an ember of determination burned. Freedom would demand more than courage - confronting the darkness she had once called her world. A kiss always haunted resolve, a presence attached like her own shadow even in the vast unknown; a touch she yearned to feel, a voice she longed to hear.
The chains he left behind were not so easily broken.
His presence lingered in every step she took, the promises that felt more like a curse than salvation.

Haunted by her past and hunted by the unknown - companions to offer salvation, guiding hands in a world of lost souls finding a once cherished home within world of cruel beauty, where monsters wear the faces of angels and every step forward comes at a price.
But the shadows of her escape are only the beginning, and somewhere in the darkness, he waits. Watching. Searching. Promising that no matter how far she runs, no one escapes him for long.
Freedom comes with a choice: to face what lies ahead or be consumed by the past she left behind as some chains are never truly broken.
