The Assassin's Legend

It was a foggy unforgiving night in the underbelly of the worlds poorest city. No one was out in the street but the rats and a lonely drunkard swaying to and fro after leaving 'The Drunk Duckling'; the only reasonable tavern open at this time of night. Once I saw him leave the safer light of the tavern I slipped out from the cover of the shadows and followed him, occasionally looking behind me to see if any one was following. I quietly followed him, slipping in and out of the shadows until I saw him turn into an alleyway. I stopped just outside the entrance to the alley, took some calming breaths and told myself, "I need to do this." I quickly thought over what I would have to do and then turned into the alleyway; this was going to be just like every other time I had to mug someone so that I could live another day.

Someone behind me said, "Well, well, what do we have here? A little alley rat who chose the wrong person to mug, but I have to give you credit, didn't notice you had followed me an till I got to the alley entrance." This statement sent my head spinning; how had he gotten behind me and where did he get the knife? Then I noticed I had lost mine and it hit me, the stranger somehow took the knife from me. As soon as I started turning he said,"Don't move! I want to know where you learnt to follow someone and use the shadows like that. I also want to know which street guild you are in."

He must be able to see my confusion because he sighed heavily and shook his head at the same time, "Nevermind, if you find out the truth and actually want to leave meet me back here in 3 days. That should be enough time and then I will find out about the rest of what we agreed on."

After he said that he turned and walked away blending into the shadows in the ally way, in less than 10 seconds he was gone and I was left alone thing over what I have been told. Considering whether or not my whole life had been a lie...
