"We've been looking for a protégé, sorta like how Batsy has that sidekick, Robin, was it?" Joker grins. "We like you. You're funny." ... He was hated and abandoned by most people but there were a few people that were there for him. This one event is what changed his life forever. (This was inspired by the stories Back to the beginning by Marvelpart3 and Yes To Heaven by whodoesn'tliketvshows. If you haven't already read those stories I'd recommend reading them.)
