Ashrudel is a highly respected kingdom. The rulers have two healthy sons, Martyn and Philip. But when the king gets fatally sick, the queen forces her sons to marry a princess of their choosing. Each day is filled with strenuous trials, training, and more. Philip never felt an attraction towards girls, so every day has become torture for him. In a society that burns people at the stake for homosexuality, he knows it is crucial to keep that part about him a secret. Most days Philip sneaks out of the castle and into the village, seeing life from a normal person's perspective. But one day, he stumbles across a beautiful peasant named Daniel.

Dan Howell was the typical spoiled, rich boy with butlers driving him to operas and maids making him nachos for breakfast. Phil Lester, however, was the opposite. Barely any money and deadbeat parents, he lives in a bad neighborhood in a gross apartment with cat hair covering the carpet and an odd roommate. And then Dan's parents decide he needs to love someone rather than himself, and when Phil shows up at his mansion steps, Dan's parents grow fond of him- so much that the two are exchanging rings and Phil is moving in with his new spouse. They tell Dan he should give it a few months, to be patient, and if he still doesn't like him then they'll sign the divorce papers and call it quits. Marriage isn't perfect, right? Well this one is the exact example. But they could always pretend.

However, it didn't fit him, he didn't feel right promising himself to a God he didn't fully believe in. With countless rules Dan wasn't sure he could live his life to eternally, he starts to wonder if this life is his, or his parents. Suddenly, as he begins to doubt everything he's ever been taught, a reformer is brought to St Patricia's, somebody who has the power to change everything; as cliche as it sounds. Dan begins to feel things he ought not to as a good Christian boy, but not every rule is okay to be broken.
