The United States fell apart after a drawn out civil war. The war began when the income gap between the wealthy, and the poor reached record levels. The economy crashed, and people began starving. Soon the poor began to form mobs and attacked the wealthy. The government stepped in to quell the violence, but only ended up fueling the flames of revolution. The two sides fought for years, and eventually tore the whole of the country apart so much that neither side won. Years later, the survivors of The Fall now live in isolated city-states that protect their people from the savagery of the wild lands. But, even with institutional anarchy reigning supreme, it doesn't seem all that much has changed...
