Every thirteen years, the Goldstone is ready to decide the next human to receive a spirit animal. A ceremony is held in each of the four districts of Dereli, to determine the lucky-or, more realistically, unlucky-person to be given the animal. This person is whisked off to the Bureau to be pampered and trained to become the next hero of Dereli- or, in all reality, used as a pawn in the political games of the Government.
Enter Briar Evans, this year's chosen one. Briar is independent and brave, and she refuses to be used. She and her animal manage to escape to the forests that surround Dereli, where she discovers a mass rebellion that is alive and growing. She must lead this rebellion, as she and her animal are the only ones who have ever managed to escape the Bureau. Is she strong enough to do this? Or, like everything else in her life so far, with the rebellion be destroyed, with only her to be held responsible?
